Circus Mandala

Circus Mandala

A playful mandala with showmanship—bright momentum held inside a disciplined circle. The motifs feel like performers taking turns, each flourish landing precisely before the next one begins.

Ink and alcohol markers on paper.

Artist Statement

inspired by the many faces of the concept of the circus. I remember going to see the circus when it came through town when I was a kid. I also witnessed a Mexican circus many years later when it passed through a very small town in Mexico. The organized chaos of the circus offers us many metaphors about life. The circus is a chance to let go and be a kid again. The circus shows us a side of life rarely seen on a day to day basis. We see people having fun, yet taking risks, all with a smile on their face. We see people in a seemingly harmonious relationship with large animals. As a child all these represented freedom, abandonment of fear, teamwork and balance.

The circus can also represent chaos, disarray and style over substance. Like so many things in life, there are positive and negative aspects that we can tune into. While it’s important to recognize the wholeness of all our experiences, we can choose which of those aspects hold the lessons we need to grow. Life is a circus! Which aspects will you focus on?
